Paper Piecing · Quilting

Continuing Along

Hi Everyone,

I’ve been plugging away on my paper pieced blocks.  The geese circles are starting to come together.  I’ve laid them out on the floor to get a look at the effect.  I’m liking it so far.

2nd layout

I’m enjoying the colors I’ve chosen.  I do tend to migrate to the warm colors more than cool ones.  I’ve been seeing all the fall colors in the fabrics at the store and would love to pick them all up.  I have to restrain myself.

In this project, I’m finding that it takes a while longer to do than regular piecing.  There’s no chain piecing.  You’ll have to pin, sew, and trim each seam you make.  It does however produce very precise points on the geese.  I’ve never made geese blocks using the regular piecing technique without some of the points being cut off.  It’s always a bit disappointing.  So if you’re not in a hurry to finish a project the results are very satisfying.

Next next step in the pattern once I finish the geese blocks will be to sew the geese into strips from the center to the outside.  I am looking forward to doing something a little different.  There are quite a few geese blocks and I’m getting a bit bored doing the same thing over and over.  I may have to take a small break and work on my stack and flip quilt a bit.  This feeling for me is not limited to just this project, I’ve had the same thing happen when I was working on the hunter’s star quilt.  I teeter back and forth from obsessing over finishing a quilt and getting a little bored with it before I’m done.  Once it’s finally done though I’m always very proud of what I’ve accomplished.  I hope that I’m not the only one who feels like this.

A friend from work went fishing and brought me back a huge speckled trout.  It still has the scales on it and I was told it would be good to just season it with whatever my favorites are and put it on the grill.  I’ve never done it this way yet, but it does sound yummy.  Another idea I’m considering is to go ahead and finish filleting and blackening it and maybe topping with a cream sauce. Also sounds yummy.

The linky parties I usually participate in can be found by clicking this link.  Please visit them and see what others are up to.  There are many bloggers out there who share their tips, projects, and tutorials to help us through ours.

Well that’s all for now.  Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Hi Cherie,
You are making great progress with these flying geese! Before you know it, they’ll all line up in a row for you and you’ll fly on to your next project. I love the colors you have chosen. ~smile~ Roseanne

  2. I have always admired the geese in a circle. I saw this design in a floor in a hotel I visited once. Your geese look great!

  3. Tedious perhaps, but the end results are so amazing! I am also attracted to fabrics in fall colors and must restrain myself from buying them all! Thanks for linking up to Wednesday Wait Loss.

  4. That is the neatest flock of geese! You nailed it with your review of the paper piecing technique – it’s more finicky than normal piecing, but enables certain details and designs far more easily. And yes, I totally get the teeter-totter thing. For me, the boredom usually wins out, which is why I almost always have two to three projects going at once to move between. Sometimes, though, I just get the bug to put my head down and completely finish a given quilt. Or a gifting deadine forces the issue. 🙂
