Hi Everyone and Welcome to My Blog,
A while back I was asked to test a foundation pieced pattern. It was the first time I had ever tried that technique, but I jumped right in the project. I thought the pattern was gorgeous and it looked pretty intense for a newbie. I learned very quickly that paper piecing was very different from regular piecing. However, the pattern was clear and easy to follow. Denise uses a strip method that I’ve come to appreciate. Please take a look at her tutorial. The only way I can explain it is that you cut strips of fabric that you can fit the template in. I’m only a novice, but I don’t find there is as much wasted fabric.
Here’s the link to the pattern. You can see my progress on it here.
Well, here is my finished quilt.
So now I am doing another pattern test for her. It is called the Nostalgia Twist. You can see her example in progress here. And a quick picture.
When she sent me the pattern, I mentioned it would look good in green and I would probably use the colorway. Since she already had my idea, I’ve decided on something a little different. So, please take a look at mine. I’ve done the mariner’s compass in the primary colors and will do the rest in blue and white.
The linky parties I usually participate in can be found by clicking this link. Please visit them and see what others are up to leave some comments and encouragement. There are many bloggers out there who share their tips, projects, and tutorials to inspire us.
That’s all for now. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Cherie! Oh how I love that Mariner’s Compass center. Nice job, and I love the colors and fabrics you chose. It’s a perfect choice for the blue and white surrounding, too – kind of makes you think of water or the sea. I can’t wait to see this progress. ~smile~ Roseanne

How do you do it? I must know. The blue does represent the waters used with the compass in my vision.

Hi Karla,
My advise to you if you’d like to try is to start small. Before I took on the quilt, I practiced on a small tree scene.

Hi Christine, After I got the compass together I realized how bright it was. Maybe I should have chosen a different more subtle contrast color to tone it down. But it’s too late now I think it’ll be ok.

Truly this is a very difficult paper piecing pattern for a newbie. But I guess her instructions made it easier! Stunning!

How nice of you to test this for Denise! It really says a lot of if a newbie can take on a complicated looking foundation pattern like this one, and come out with beautiful results like yours! I’m liking your second color choices. How nautical! Thanks for linking to Wednesday Wait Loss.
