Checking in With a Finish

Hi Everyone and Welcome to My Blog,

I’m sorry I haven’t written very much lately, but I’ve been in a funk.  The weather here has been cold/hot with lots of rain.  And while I read about others who get to work in their sewing studios during this time, I just feel like I want to plop on the sofa and do nothing.  It warmed up for a time and now the weeds are growing like crazy.  I’m a big allergy now.

I want to give a big ole shout out to my friend Karla at My Sewful Retirement for pinging me in her blog.  She did a great job learning to paper piece.  Aren’t those points just perfect?

My job is going good and I now have a final travel rotation.  I will be in Larose every other Thursday and Friday.  It doesn’t seem to bad so far.  I’ve been a little stressed with all the newness of it and maybe that may have something to do with my bit of the “don’t wants”.

Mardi Gras is nearly here and with it come lots of parades and fun.  We don’t really go out in the crowds any more.  I’ve done enough of that when I was young and dumb, but an extra day off never hurts.

I’ve got a finish to show you.  My first one of 2019.  I know, I know, I’m pretty slow.  But I really like how it turned out.  It’s a gift for someone but I’m not telling who.  When their birthday comes around then they will know.  I think it’s bright and cheerful just like the recipient. This was a disappearing hour glass block from a Jenny Doan tutorial.

Finiahed

I backed it with some yardage I got at a bolt sale.  Every year a representative from Quilting Treasures comes to town with a presentation on how they make the fabric and bring tons of end of roll bolts for us to buy at a reduced price.  You have to buy the whole bolt and they are usually 5-8 yards.  I usually like to pick backing fabrics at that time.  I had this quilt in mind when I got these.

For the quilting I did a fun stipple on it.  I had a great time with it.  It was fast and easy.  Here’s a close up.  I think I will do this again and again.  I do love the mindless sewing.  Since I only have a domestic machine, it’s pretty hard to man handle the quilt and make too many turns.

Stipple

One more thing before I go, about 2 years ago I had a boss here who was transferred to Paris.  That is where our HQ is.  She left me this Orchid that had already lost it’s blooms.  I’ve seen them in the grocery and hardware stores and always thought they were beautiful.  So I You Tubed it’s care and I was finally rewarded.  These have been blooming since December and I’ve been told they blooms can last 3-6 months.  I can’t tell you what I did.  Really I just remembered to water it every week.  Now I’m hooked on Orchids.  I just want more and more of them.  I got some more for Valentine’s Day but I’ll show you those next time.

Orchid

Well that’s all I have for now.

Don’t worry about your funk…maybe your body just needs some down time…maybe a good novel and some tea is just the thing. 🙂

    1. Hi Laura, Thanks!  I am a tea drinker.  How did you know?  The one that soothes my soul the most is the apple cinnamon one.  I don’t know how but it always makes be feel better.  There’s a passion fruity one I also like.  Usually just green tea with lemon in the morning to wake me up. 1. Hi Deanna, Thanks!  I received one of those Just Add Ice Orchids for Valentines Day, but while I was You Tubing it’s care, some of the growers recommended to use room temp water instead.  They said it might burn the roots.  So I am a little scared to use ice.  They certainly don’t like to sit in water.  The roots will rot.  I have one of them that is struggling to come back from that.  I repotted it recently and it only has two viable roots left.  I hope I can save it.   Best Regards,Cherie BurtonCherie’s Quilting Journey

  3. Hi Cherie! I’ve missed you – I’m glad you’re back. You have a beautiful finish to share with us for the year. Your friend’s birthday will be all the brighter for receiving this gorgeous quilt. And those backing fabrics go so well with it. Nice job all the way around. I hope you are feeling less stress with your job. That’s no fun – you spend too much time involved with work activities to not enjoy it. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

    1. Hi Roseanne, Thanks!  I think once my learning curve with my new job is over I’ll feel much better.  Sometimes change is hard to process, but it will be fine.  The job security that comes with it is something I certainly like.   Best Regards,Cherie BurtonCherie’s Quilting Journey

  4. Cherie, your disappearing hourglass is beautiful! Congrats on the finish. Your stippling looks great — did you use your new basting technique? Glad you finally have a work routine that you like. The weather here has been hot/cold also — My sinuses are driving me crazy and the OTC medicine isn’t working so I may have to visit a doctor 😦 Happy Tuesday ♥♥

    1. Hi Karla, Thanks!  Yes, I did use my new basting method.  It such an easier way.  Will you be going to Mardi Gras this year?  That crazy weather is awful.  Saturday was in the low 80’s and today it’s in the 60’s.  I saw that Tuesday it was supposed to be in the 40’s.  I just wish it would make up it’s mind and quit jumping around.  I’m ready for Spring to just come and stay.  I think I would make my mood much better.

  5. It’t beautiful Cherie, you shouldn;t have. But I dont know if I can wait until August to cuddle with it. A regular routine will certainly help with your sewing time therefor will improve your mood. A friend of mine is pulling a float in the parade.

    1. Hi Denise, LOL!  Yes, I am trying to come up with a routine that gives me a chance to do all the things and need and wish to do.  I think I’m getting there.  I’ve been working on the nostalgia quilt also, but this one is taking much longer since I’m trying to so some special quilting on it with my domestic.  I should have an update on it soon.  Where is the parade your friend is in?  Down here somewhere or where you are?  I’ve been told that the temperature on Tuesday will be 44 degrees.  It might be ok if the sun is out.   Best Regards,Cherie BurtonCherie’s Quilting Journey

  7. Hi, Cherie. I can totally relate to those “funks” where you lose interest — MADDENINGLY! — in the activities that usually give you the most joy and satisfaction. I hope your funk is now behind you. That birthday quilt is so beautiful and cheery, and the recipient is going to feel the love that went into every stitch! Congratulations on your orchid, by the way. My father-in-law is really into orchids and has an entire greenhouse full of them in Florida, but every single one I’ve brought home from the nursery has died an agonizing death at my hands…

    1. HI Rececca, Thanks!  I think I just got lucky on the Orchid.  I must have found a good place for it.  I didn’t water too much.  I was really surprised and happy when I saw a flower spike.  I would love to go to an Orchid and see all the different ones.   Best Regards,Cherie BurtonCherie’s Quilting Journey

  8. YOur first finish is so beautiful with lovely quilting. I always have an orchid…they do like light and cooler temp at night and I follow the rule of feeding them 3 ice cubes a week for the watering. So actually find great rewards with little effort.
I think there is an ebb and flow to our creativity; I’m sure your mojo will return.

    1. Hi Joycelyn, Thanks!  I am really enjoying my orchids.  They are a bit pricey and I was afraid to spend too much money only to kill it.  I always thought they were difficult to take care of.  Since I gifted one I had nothing to lose and everything to gain.  Thanks for stopping by.   Best Regards,Cherie BurtonCherie’s Quilting Journey

  10. I think this time of year tends to lend itself to some funkiness. The holidays are over, January seems to take forever, February flies by, and we’re all just waiting to thaw out a bit! The quilting is fantastic, and I just love those colors together! The orchids are beautiful! I wish I could have some, but my black thumb is infamous so I just let plants be so they can live. LOL!

    1. Hi Christine,   I agree the season is really affecting me, but spring is just around the corner here.  A couple of warm days with sunshine will do wonders for my mood.  As far as my thumb is concerned, sometimes it’s green and others it’s brown.  I just got lucky so far with this orchid.  I have one that is struggling to stay alive.  I over watered it and killed all the roots but one.  Now it’s having a hard time keeping the leaves hydrated.  I repotted it and hoping that it will grow some more.  We will see.   Best Regards,Cherie BurtonCherie’s Quilting Journey
