Stained Glass Quilting

I’m afraid that since I was without my machine for a time, I haven’t been able to complete my goal for February.  I did begin it before my baby left me and I’m very anxious to get it back.

I’ve decided to use my walking foot to do the quilting.  I get the best results that way until I get more proficient doing FMQ.  Every week I try to spend a few minutes practicing on some scrap batting and muslin.  I think I’m getting better at stippling and I’m looking for the courage to try it on my disappearing hour-glass quilt.  I’m hoping by the end of the quilt I should be even better at it.

Back to my Stained Glass Quilt.  Instead of falling back on my straight lines from end to end of the quilt, I’ve decided to try to kick it up a notch.  On the 8X4 inch patches, I’ve stitched three rows of diagonal lines every two inches apart.

My vision is to do a different design on each size block.  On the blocks that are square, I’m thinking of doing some square quilting with in the square.  I think that three lines on each side of the block will be enough to emphasize the block.  I haven’t decided what to do on the large rectangles or long skinny blocks yet.

    I love the diagonal stitching in the rectangle blocks! That looks really nice, and it will be really cool to see all the different types of stitches in the various blocks. That will look great on the reverse side, as well! There is a Facebook group where Angela Walters is sharing a weekly FMQ exercise. If you are interested and can’t find it, let me know and I’ll share the link with you! You might find it helpful. I’m thinking of doing a set of placemats where each one is quilted differently. ~smile~ Roseanne

      2. I’m very anxious for it. I pulled out old faithful this weekend to sew some regatta strips, but it’s too small to fit a quilt through it. Especially with all the manipulation I’m doing with the walking foot. Lots or turning.

  4. Love the straight line focus stitching you are doing in these! Really works with the stained glass design. Using a walking foot doesn’t have to limit you to straight line designs. Check out Mary Mashuta’s two books on Walking Foot designs or Jackie Gering’s Craftsy classes for more ideas on expanding your walking foot’s design range.

      Thanks! I have watched Jackie Gering’s craftsy class just recently which was the reason I ventured with this new design. I will have to look up Mary Mashuta. I’m sure she has some good ideas also.
